Road from Delhi to Agra

FULL AGRA PHOTO ALBUM
On the road from Delhi to Agra – it was a mix of four lane highways to one-lane each way in the middle of the desert. Leaving Delhi we passed massive newly constructed business districts that are home to many multi-national corporations. This area also had some of the nicest apartment complexes I’ve seen in India thus far.

I’d like to mention that driving in India is a lot different than in the States. First, they drive on the left-hand side of the road. Second, lanes on the highways was completely ignored. Because there is a mix of the size of vehicles on the road – many more smaller bikes and auto-rickshaws – weaving through traffic is the only way to get anywhere. Finally, horns are used, not as a way to let other drivers know you’re mad, but as a way to let other drivers know you’re coming up beside them on the road. This makes for traffic behind much loader on a consistent basis than in the States. In fact, almost every truck I’ve seen has “Horn Please” or “Blow Horn” painted on the back of it to remind smaller drivers to let them know their there.

As I’m writing this (we’re actually on the road now), we just passed a fantastic scene that I failed to grab on my camera. One side of the two-lane road was taken up by an entire herd of sheep and was blocking the opposite traffic.

Before arriving in Agra, we stopped to see The Tomb of Akbar the Great located in Sikandra. It is an important Mughal architectural masterpiece, built 1605-1613. This is one of the four outside gates.

We had to put on shoe covers to enter the tomb.

This site was one of the least crowded we visited and it was very peaceful to walk around. There was also a large heard of deer that live on the preserve on the site.
