We went out this morning to a temple that Amma and Appa have been going to for years. You can see me standing inside the temple here with Amma.
Hindu temples are not like churches or synagogues where there are rows of seats – in temples – you go around (you can walk in a circle around the alter inside the building) the main alter area and pray standing, sitting, and bowing around it.
They priest was very welcoming to me which was very nice and the man who manages the temple gave me some mango pulp (you can drink it like a thick juice) which I enjoyed.
Before entering a temple (or any house for that matter) you take off your shoes outside. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was a man there watching the shoes – the card inside the shoe shown here is like a coat check system. Love it!
The cows here really do just take to being one with their city. This one here actually paused at the intersection, just like any car would and waited to make his left-hand turn into traffic.
We had lunch in an area of town called Gandhi Bazaar.
The restaurant (or hotels as they call them here) was typically all vegetarian and I had a wonderful butter masala dosa.
Dosas are a traditional south Indian dish - the dosa itself is similar to a thick crepe that is crispy. The inside of this one usually has a mashed potato and onion filling. If you are wondering - that is butter sitting on the top.
Our shopping mission today was focused on invitations. We went to the warehouse district part of town called Chickpet and had so many paper shops to choose from. After reviewing several invitation shops, we walked through Avenue Road. It was incredible. I’ve never been on such a crowded, dirty, thriving, and fascinating road in my life. There were so many shops and so many merchants selling their goods on the street and everyone had somewhere to be in a hurry (ironic for a culture that is notoriously late). It would have been very easy to be run over by a scooter or auto – I just couldn’t stop laughing at how great it was. These pictures don’t do this area justice – it was physically impossible to stop and take a picture in the busiest area.
